Greetings from the President

I was born and raised in Tomakomai, and now, as if drawn by fate, I have returned to my hometown. Just as young salmon descend into the ocean, grow large, and then return to their home rivers to produce offspring, I, too, will work wholeheartedly to nurture talented young students at this college of technology into outstanding engineers and send them out into society, while also contributing to the local and global community.
Our school was founded in 1964, and we celebrated our 60th anniversary last year. This was all thanks to the support of alumni, students, faculty and staff, local residents, and the many people who have been involved with our school in Tomakomai City and throughout Hokkaido.

Our school's educational philosophy is to foster rich humanity and a spirit of self-reliance. We encourage the balanced development of knowledge, virtue, and physical fitness necessary for engineers, and cultivate individuals who can contribute to the advancement of society. Nestled in the rich natural environment of the Tarumae Mountains, our school has produced approximately 9,000 undergraduate graduates and 500 graduates of our advanced course. Many of our alumni are parents and children of our school. Currently, our school has a student capacity of 200 undergraduate students and 20 advanced course students in each year. In the undergraduate course, all students begin in the Innovative Engineering Course. Through their studies, their aptitude is assessed and they are assigned to one of the following courses in their second year; Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Electronics, Information Science & Engineering, Applied Chemistry & Biology, or Urban & Environmental Engineering, where they will master their field of expertise.

We also offer a Frontier Course, which fosters next-generation entrepreneurial talent across all courses. With ample dormitories and an expressway bus service, our students come from all over Hokkaido, including the Iburi and Sapporo areas, as well as Tomakomai City.
Our employment and academic placement rates are excellent, making us a highly attractive destination for junior high school graduates. Approximately two-thirds of our undergraduate graduates find employment, and one-third transfer to prestigious universities, including our advanced course. Our graduates have earned a wide range of employment opportunities, from civil service, manufacturing, construction, and consulting to IT and finance, and are highly regarded in all sectors.
Because the reputation of our school for the next generation depends on our current and future students, our faculty and staff are constantly striving for high-quality education and research. For example, it is needed urgently highly skilled IT professionals to drive the growth of Digital and Green Transformation in Hokkaido. We have made a new curriculum which is "Mathematics, Data Science, and AI Education Program" certified by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Furthermore, we will create a new Information Electronics Course after two courses will merge together. Since last year, we have opened a creative engineering workshop where students can freely use the latest equipment, including 3D printers, further enhancing our entrepreneurial education environment. At the same time, we are committed to English language education and internationalization. Students develop international communication skills through English camps and other programs, and gain overseas experience through training programs at Kasetsart University in Thailand and Eastern University of Technology in New Zealand. The number of international students from Asia is also increasing.
All of our faculty and staff will continue to work closely with the local community and various other stakeholders to cultivate talent who can thrive in global society, and to conduct research activities, all of which will contribute to the development of the region and the country. We appreciate your continued guidance and support.

12th President, Katsunori Nagano
